Recently, AI media consulting released the investigation and Research Report on the market status and consumption trend of China’s Gym industry in 2021, which analyzed the development potential and user portraits of China’s Gym industry.
The report shows that more than 60% of gym consumers are women. By 2025, China’s sports fitness population in the basic stage may increase to 325-350 million, accounting for 65% – 70% of the national sports fitness population.
Second tier cities will become the main force in the development of fitness industry
The report points out that in 2019 before the outbreak of the epidemic, the global gym revenue reached US $96.7 billion, with more than 184 million members and 210000 facilities, making the fitness industry flourish. However, the epidemic has brought varying degrees of challenges to the global gym industry, and the uneven development level of the fitness industry around the world makes the challenges more prominent.
In 2020, the penetration rate of fitness population in the United States reached 19.0%, ranking first in the world, followed by European and American sports powers such as Britain (15.6%), Germany (14.0%), France (9.2%), and China’s penetration rate of fitness population was only (4.9%). High fitness penetration countries are characterized by high per capita disposable income, large urban population density, high obesity rate, developed gym industry, etc.
In 2019, the United States has 62.4 million gym members, with an industry market size of US $34 billion, accounting for 35.2% of the global gym industry market share, and the commercial gym industry is richer.
Relatively speaking, in 2020, the number of gym members in China has reached 70.29 million, with a penetration rate of 4.87%, which needs to be further improved. Although China’s Gym industry started late, the market scale has increased from 272.2 billion yuan in 2018 to 336.2 billion yuan in 2020. It is expected that the market scale of China’s Gym industry will reach 377.1 billion yuan in 2021.
The prosperity ranking of China’s Gym industry is North China (index 94.0), East China, northeast, South China, central China, southwest and northwest. The penetration rate of gym members in the four cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen basically exceeds 10%, which has reached or close to the level of developed countries.
Nearly half of Chinese consumers spend 1001-3000 yuan on annual cards, while the proportion of respondents with annual card consumption lower than 1000 yuan and higher than 5001 Yuan account for 10.0% and 18.8% respectively.
Taking the consumption capacity of gym members in East China as an example, the average annual card price of gym in this region is 2390 yuan, and the step-by-step statistics of the price are as follows:
Less than 1000 yuan (14.4%);
1001-3000 yuan (60.6%);
3001-5000 yuan (21.6%);
More than 5001 yuan (3.4%).
In addition, the penetration rate of some quasi first tier cities has also been close to 10%, and consumers are optimistic about the consumption prospect and services of gyms.
From the domestic perspective, the second tier and low tier cities will have great market potential in the future.
